BADRAP (Bay Area Dog Lovers Responsible About Pit Bulls), based in Oakland CA, was formed in 1999 to tackle the issues that had been resulting in suffering and early death of San Francisco Bay Area pit-bull-type dogs. Soon the organization developed into a nationally recognized resource for dog owners and shelters, offering pets for adopters, training classes for dog owners, and presentations and professional consultations to animal welfare leaders around the country.
Since 2005, BADRAP been providing free training/behavior counseling, vaccinations, microchips, support to pit bull owners, and onsite spay/neuter surgeries in underserved neighborhoods in the SF East Bay, including Oakland, Pittsburg, and Richmond CA. In 2013, BADRAP purchased a spay/neuter van to increase the number of surgeries available to dogs in underserved communities in the East Bay.
BADRAP's Keep'em Home project works to help families maintain their bond with their dog(s) during times of crisis and offers support and resources for renters with dogs, homeless individuals and their dogs, spay/neuter services, training, education, and more.
Free and low-cost dog training classes are available in Berkeley CA through BADRAP weekly since 2001. Participants learn basic handling skills, leash manners and responsible dog ownership practices. The classes serve dog owners and local shelter dogs.
BADRAP may be best known for their work evaluating and placing dogs from NFL player Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels. The group routinely travels to support authorities with evaluations of pit-bull-type dogs from natural disasters, cruelty cases, and dog fighting cases, and provides disposition recommendations to various dog welfare agencies, law enforcement and courts.
BR works to help shelters around the country create solutions for the pit bulls, including education/adoption programs for pit bulls and other blocky-headed dogs in animal shelters.
BADRAP's website and Facebook pages are viewed by thousands each day and offer tales of adoptable dogs and dogs and their families who have been helped by resources, along with helpful information and videos to improve the lives of dogs and dog owners.
